The commission assigned to examine New Hampshire state properties for possible sale or lease is expected to discuss leasing Cannon Mountain and borrowing against the state's tobacco settlement money. The panel is holding its third meeting on Thursday. The state's goal is to bring in $60 million to help close a $295 million budget gap. The eight-member commission, established earlier this year when the budget was passed, has to deliver its first report by Oct. 1, and its final report by Jan. 1, 2011.

New Mexico ranks 5th in per capita fed spending

2 hours, 20 minutes ago

The Census Bureau says New Mexico ranks fifth in the nation in federal spending per person in the state. Federal expenditures were the equivalent of about $13,670 for each New Mexican in the 2009 fiscal year. Per capita spending was higher only in Alaska, Virginia, Hawaii and Maryland. The Consolidated Federal Funds report said more than $27 billion was spent in New Mexico in 2009. That's an increase of 15 percent from 2008 and is partly because of an economic stimulus package.
